Two questions asked by a Facebook fan:

Question 1: I saw your FB post on HSA’s, went there to see what the annual family contribution limit is for 2011...and didn’t see it there. Can someone tell me what it is?

Answer 1: The family maximum contribution limit is $6,150 per year (as a side note, you have up until 4/15 of the following year to make contributions for the previous year, just like an IRA)

Question 2: What if we have medical expenses that exceed our allowed contributions? Is there a ‘better’ way to deal with those? Obviously, we pay them.  BUT, if some of them can be put on payment plans with 0%, can they be paid with health savings in 2012?

Answer 2: You can make withdrawals for prior year expenses, as long as the health savings account was set up at the time of the claim.
